Returning a Rental Car at MXP - Milan

Our flight was scheduled to leave for EWR at 1030 from MXP, so we made plenty of time to check in our rental car (Hertz), make it throught security and arrive at the gate with time to kill.

Those plans went slightly astray when we discovered that finding the car rental return parking area was not as easy as it might have seemed to the casual observer.

We made two complete loops of the airport then, at the last second (the rising sun was obscuring the sign for "autonoleggio" - rental return), we headed for the Sheraton Hotel entrance, which was mere meters before the entrance to the rental return.

So, as you are approaching the terminal, stay to the right, looking for the autonoleggio sign and the sign for the entrance to the Sheraton Hotel, the rightmost of the three options, then follow the signs to the dropoff.

Even at Catania airport, which is much smaller than MXP, finding the car rental return can be a challenge. There's one lot for Hertz and Europcar with a teeny tiny sign, and one for all other companies with a large sign. We had a Hertz rental, and what we had to do was go to the "other companies" lot and ask (after making a full loop of the airport). Even funnier, my friend returned the next year without me, and he again had trouble finding the Europcar return lot (having forgotten where it was).

At Europcar, further time was taken up with the agent checking the car for damage. Even though he had full "walk away" coverage, the agent insisted on documenting any damage before he would sign off on the return. My friend made his plane, but with far less time than he felt comfortable with.

A good reminder to allow more time than you think you'll need when you have to return a rental car.
