Has anyone returned a rental car to the main train station in Rome in mid afternoon on a Saturday?
How crazy was the traffic?
We have a GPS but it might be better to return it to Campino since we will be coming back from southern Italy?
I would not attempt it. We were just in Rome and rented a car at Ciampino(headed to Tuscany) and it was very easy. Ran into some people who picked up their car at Termini and they said they would never do it again.
Definitely Ciampino, very easy to get in-and-out, also on your way coming from south. All the rental companies are in the same building with shuttle (5 minutes ride) to the gate and taxi stands. The car lot is right next to the building. Taxi 30 euro to any location in town, Termini crowded and hard to drive around, then you still need to get to your hotel.
John, I can't say anything about Ciampino and it may well be your better option but I HAVE returned a car to Termini and the traffic was...kind of like Seattle rush hour traffic. A little chaotic, but not a deal killer. If you do end up returning a car to Termini, the parking garage for rental cars is a few blocks southwest of the station on the south side of Via Giovanni Giolitti. The BEST way to get there is to get on Via Marsala on the north side of Termini and take the tunnel under the tracks on Sottopassaggio A. Pettinelli. Then you can take a left on Via Giovanni Giolitti and a quick right into the parking garage. You don't want to do like I did, which was to circle around a few times in the area south of the garage only to find the one-way streets were going the wrong way for me, accompanied by commentary from my wife and children regarding my shortcomings behind the wheel and occasional remarks concerning what a warm day it was.
Google Maps is your friend...check it out and you'll see what I'm talking about.
