We have been to Varenna, and absolutely loved it. Returning this summer to Lake Como for 3 days as part a of a larger trip. I have stayed at Hotel du Lac, in Varenna, which is not available for my dates. I booked Hotel Garni Corona, lakeview, in Menaggio. But, will it measure up to Varenna? I am thinking of booking Hotel Royal Victoria (not lakeview), in Varenna. Advice?

That is a hard choice! Menaggio has a lovely lakefront promenade. You already know Varenna's passarella. While a lake view room at the Hotel Garni Corona is dreamy, the public areas/terrace at Hotel Royal Victoria are luxurious, too. There are probably more choices or shops and restaurants in Menaggio, if that matters to you. You've checked Hotel du Lac under it's new name, Casa du Lac??

I stayed at the Garni Corona in Menaggio. Loved the hotel and the location. Free classical concert on Piazza Garibaldi, around the corner, every evening (June/July).. And no problem finding a free table at a restaurant. I recommend it.

Brenda, I must have looked for Hotel du Lac when they were closed for remodeling. I see now that under the new name and with new prices(!), there are rooms.
Dave, thank you for the vote for Varenna, but I much prefer hotels.
Roberto, I appreciate your opinion, but I think I am looking for more luxury. So, Hotel Royal Victoria it is!

Royal Victoria in Varenna (4 star hotel)? or Grand Hotel Victoria (5 star hotel) in Menaggio? The latter had lake views and it's on the lake.
Both probably meet your requirements.
Grand Hotel Menaggio is also gorgeous (also on the lake with pool on the lake).
