My wife and I will be returning to Italy in May 2014. This time we'll be staying in Rome, we spent 5 days in there last, and will be doing day trips before heading to Bari to take the overnight ferry to Dubrovnik. Here are my tentative plans while in Rome; Rome Day 1 Rest day Day 2 Colosseum underground tour Day 3 Appian Way Bike tour Day 4 3 hr Catacombs tour Day 5 Amalfi Coast 13.5 hrs Day 6 Capri tour Can add day 7 or ?
I believe the Capri tour takes in Naples, just wondering if there are points further south that are "must sees" before we head to Bari. We're not on a time table so we can always spend more time in Italy rather than just 7 days. If we leave for Bari from Rome then we'll probably take the train that arrives around 6:48 pm then take the 10 pm ferry. Does anyone know if there is luggage storage at the ferry terminal in case we decide to take an earlier train? Is Bari worth a day or two for visiting? We're not hung up on going to cathedrals or museums, but if it's a must see, then we can do that. We just like to take in the sights and feel "the flavor" of where we visit. TIA!
My personal order of preference: Paestum, south of Salerno, might be a good stop for a night, it has a very good archeological zone and museum, and a beach. Not a lot of local flavor, though. I would suggest Matera, but it's not easy to get there (you might be able to get a bus from Salerno connecting through Potenza, but most public transportation goes to Bari first, then you would backtrack to Matera by a private train line or by bus. For me, it's worth it, the bus or train from Bari only takes about an hour. Bari is a business city with a beautiful historic center, but it's not an easy little town. Trani, a little north of Bari, might be more of what you are looking for.
Personally, if I wanted to get "the flavor" of the Amalfi Coast, I'd spend more than a day there. We spent three nights there, and we wish we had spent longer. There's some fun hiking in the mountains, if you're into that sort of thing, and you can take ferries to other towns and get the water view/experience. Good place to chill.
Assume day 3 is also Sunday. Very important. Also would include the Catacomb tour and the Appian Way on the same day. Just easier from a logistic view point.
Frank, I don't follow you on this Assume day 3 is also Sunday. Very important. We usually travel on a Tuesday or so, how does Sunday figure in to the plans? Thanks
