Hi all: Planning travel to Italy in May ‘22. Flying into Rome and staying for several days, and then on to Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. For our return to U.S., is it better to train to FCO the night before our return flight, or fly out of Naples? Connections to home (MSP) are better out of Rome, but can be done out of Naples either with a very early flight 6am or double connection. Thanks for your advice.
I'd rather stay near Rome airport than brave a 6AM flight, let alone a double connection. But it's your call!
I would even be inclined to flip your trip around: go straight to Naples upon arrival, and finish in Rome. That way you avoid that last night at the airport.
Either works, whatever fits your budget and travel style
We prefer direct whenever possible
You will need to be IN your departure city the night before your flight no matter where you depart from
( a 6 am departure from Naples means that last night spent in Naples)
A simple solution is to fly RT Rome but head to Amalfi on arrival, put all your Rome nights at end of your trip.
I like the idea of heading to the Amalfi Coast directly from FCO. It's not a bad train ride at all to Naples. You could "start" your vacation by taking the ferry from Naples to the Coast - beautiful scenery, fresh air, relaxing trip. If you spend your final days in Rome, you have the luxury of celebrating your vacation without stressing over getting to the airport. Taxi or train from the city will get you there easily. Doe that work for you?
Please read the reviews from people who have used the Naples Airport, there seems to be a significant number of folks who have a negative experience there. I'm going to the Amalfi Coast in September and thought about just going round trip through the Naples Airport but after reading the reviews I choose Rome (FCO) instead.
For what is worth, we have flown in and out of Naples’ airport and thought it was simple to navigate. We didn’t go to Rome at all and decided to not go there just for the airport (it was somewhat cheaper). There was no direct flight and so we went through Frankfort. I would not recommend that. Contrary to our expectations, it was much more difficult to deal with than Naples.
We had a 7 am flight and took a taxi there from water front.
I'll vote for Rome but whatever you do, don't plan on spending your last night on the Amalfi Coast, OK? If flying out of Naples, you'll want to be IN Naples the night before. You'd still be getting up at o-dark-thirty for a 6:00 AM international flight, and it's no fun (been there, done that, never again).
Spend it in Rome where hopefully you can get a flight out at a more reasonable hour.
You cannot fly out of Rome after sleeping on the Amalfi Coast, not even if you slept in Sorrento, which is closer to Rome than is the Amalfi Coast. It is too risky, and in most cases, simply impossible.
I would prefer to be in Rome if there are travel disruptions, under which I include new Covid rules, volcano dust in the air, labor disputes, broken airline equipment, or computer problems. I have flown through Naples, but it was low-end flights to/from the U.K. That's very different from transatlantic connections.
Pre-Covid, Sorrento was extremely busy in the last week of May. This is not low or shoulder season. I believe the UK remains a huge source of vast numbers of sun seekers to this destination. We had to take our sixth choice of hotel in Sorrento, because I did not book six months or more in advance.
volcano dust in the air
You flew over Naples in 1944? Thanks for missing my Grandmother's house!
@ Dario… a few years ago Vesuvius had a fire on its slopes as did the extinct volcano in Carney Park. Some flights were shut down.
OP. I’ve flown into Capodicino 10 out of 15 trips.
Have never had a problem. In fact with the improvements they’ve made, it’s much easier.
Look at United/ Lufthansa for later flights. Change
Would be Rome,Frankfort or Munich or they were before Covid.
Great recommendations. Thank you all!
