Restoration work in the Sistine and at San Clemente

I ran across these earlier today and don't remember seeing postings on the forum; apologies if I missed them!

Travelers who've been to the Vatican Museums since early February already know about restoration being done on Last Judgment. It's expected to be completed over the next 3 months but it's not unusual for this delicate sort of work to take longer than expected. Anyway, expect scaffolding on that end of the chapel until at least end of April.

The San Clemente Project has apparently been in process for awhile and is expected to be ongoing for some time. The project's Facebook photo from 2/16 shows much scaffolding around the nave, and FB members (I'm not one of those) can follow the project's progress. I can't get a good bead on a timeline other than they expect that "If all continues as planned, the first level will be fully restored by next year."

Look to the basilica's website for other updates....

Thanks, Kate for this info and the websites. I am going to Rome in April and San Clemente is on my list to visit and I had no idea that restoration work is going on. I have been there before but I am going with folks who have never been to Rome and I want them to see it.

You're welcome, Pat. I'm sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news if indeed lots of scaffolding will still be in place in April. Sounds like this treasure was in dire need of clean-up and fixes! Hopefully some of the links provided will be helpful as far as staying updated and gauging what to expect?
