I will be in Italy this summer and I was wondering if anyone can give me a heads up on what is under wraps in Rome, Florence and Venice. I know the Campanile in Venice is being worked on, but that's about it. Any other major scaffolding in San Marco Piazza? When I was in Rome in 2007, the Fountain of the Four Rivers was out of commission and Maria della Salute in Venice was covered in scaffolding. I'm assuming this work is done, but since this is Italy, you never know.
It would be great if the Italian Ministry of Culture would do a website that lists the sites that are under restoration but I'm thinking one reason they might not is that they don't want to discourage tourism. If there are specific sites you're interested in, you could try emailing a nearby hotel. You might get a response. Every now and then someone will suggest Google Maps satellite view, apparently thinking that those are real-time satellite photos. They're not. They can be over a year old. Good luck.
Emailing the hotels is a good idea. I just want to know so I can set everyone's expectations accordingly. I don't want to pump my kids up to see a specific site just to to get there and have it covered up.
