Restaurants near Assisi

Will be staying near Assisi in October. Since it is a special birthday for my wife, I am looking for recommendations for a restaurant to make the day memorable.
Ambiance is important, as is good food and wine.
Will have a car, so outside Assisi will also work.
Any ideas?

We had a wonderful meal in Spello (just about 7 miles east of Assisi). We both stayed and ate at La Bastiglia. This is a One Star Guide Michlin restaurant in a rustic room with parking available on site (not always available in Hill Towns).

Michelin has been rating restaurants in Europe for a hundred years and is considered an authority by many knowledgeable Europeans. Of the restaurants they recommend, 95% have zero stars but are good restaurants, not your usual tourist place, 3% have one star, and the remaining 2% have 2 or 3 stars. The 2 and 3 stars restaurants are going to be several hundred dollars per person. For a very special occasion, a one star restaurant is a treat--I recommend you go to the viamichelin.com website, select Restaurants, input your location, hit search, and it will give you their recommended restaurants (but not their 2 and 3 star places, for those you have to buy their book, the Michelin Red Guide to Italy).

Just note that in Assisi and possibly other rural Italian areas, most good dining establishments shut down from 4-7. We found this out in Assisi when we wanted a really nice dinner but we had to return to Florence. We missed the opportunity. There's a couple of really nice looking restaurants near the large fountain.

We stayed at the Hotel Berti in Assisi (the village-not the town) for one day/overnight in June 2008. Assisi is just spectacular. Its streets are charming, the landscape views are breathtaking, and there are many unique artisan shops all along the narrow winding lanes. Visit the historic Basilicas of Saint Clare and Saint Francis and you have a perfect medieval experience.

Hotel Berti, just inside the San Pietro gate, has a sister restaurant called Da Cecco. The ambiance is Umbrian countryside and the food was phenomenal. I had a delicious beef tenderloin with a gorgonzola cream sauce. Of course, there's the bread and olive oil, the wine, the antipasti, and the dolci - all of which were divine.

Linda, you have struck the right cord.
Beef tenderloin with gorgonzola sauce is one of our favorites.
Da Cecco it is.
Now looking forward to Assisi even more than before.
Will drink a toast to your choice.

I stayed in Assisi recently and had the most wonderful meal at Trattoria Pallotta just off the main square. I would have to say it was the best meal I had while in Italy. You can find out more by googling the restaurant name. Lovely staff and very reasonably priced. Also really popular with the locals. Advise you book.

How close to Assisi? A wonderful day would be to spend the daylight hours visiting the wonders of Assisi, stop in the Piazza Comune in mid-afternoon to pick up some snacks from Fabrizio at his deli in the square, return home for a rest and some Italian sancks and return in the evening about 7:30 -8:00 and dine at La Fortezza,up a stepped alley off the Piazza. We have had dinner there on two separate occasions. Assisi is even more beautiful at night than in the day.

Will be staying at le Case Gialle, not sure of the exact distance, but close enough to make it back in the evening. Looking forward to seeing Assisi w/o loads of tourists, and I understand it is much more peaceful in the evening.
