Restaurants in Venice

There is a group of us (6) arriving in Venice on a Monday. I've been doing some research on my own and many of the restaurants are closed on Mondays. We are staying in the San Marco neighborhood and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good restaurant, open on Mondays, authentic and not extremely expensive, but perhaps moderate.

Thank You

Fran

Fran, you might like Trattoria alla Madonna, which is just over the Rialto Bridge in San Polo, on Calle della Madonna. This an old traditional restaurant, not one of the tourist restaurants right on the Grand Canal, but very nearby. It is closed on Wednesdays. Reservations are a good idea, especially during busy seasons. You don't say when you will be in Venice. A complete web site is: ristoranteallamadonna.com. When it was first recommended to me, I went in and saw gondoliers having lunch and I knew I was in the right place. Later I asked a Venetian tour guide about it, and she said she had held her family birthday party there. So, it is popular with locals. Been there since 1954.

It's pricey but might be fun for a group of six: have an aperitivo at one of the main bars in Piazza San Marco. I did this with friends for the first (and probably only) time last year and it was fun - different prices are posted for when the musicians are playing and when they are on break. A 30-minute or hour reminder of how people used to tour.

Greetings from Leeds Point, NJ Fran - nearly neighbors to Cape May!

We will also be traveling soon to Venice, and have never been. Here are some recommendations that a successful restaurateur in Manhattan passed along to us. Sorry, not sure about pricing and days closed, but the websites are provided and perhaps you can find what you are looking for there.

The restaurant La Terraza in the Hotel Bonvecchiati is very nice - it has a nice elevated, covered patio dining area with nice views of the bridge, canal, and people walking by, it is a lovely restaurant, the food was good - not cheap but not outrageous either (for Venice). Nice upscale experience (candle-lit for dinner). It's very close to St. Mark's - you exit St. Mark's square on the northeast corner, then walk a short ways on the Fondamenta Orseolo and it'll be on your right (across from the Georgio Armani store). It's easy to find, which can be a relief in Venice lol. You can make a reservation online as well - have fun!
