Hi Jim! I live in Florence, and since you already have a steak dinner planned, I’d use another evening to try dishes like gnudi, ribollita or pappa al pomodoro. Santo Spirito and the surrounding Oltrarno streets are lovely areas to explore for a relaxed dinner. For the wine, ask what they’re pouring by the glass that pairs with your dish—you may find something more interesting than choosing from the longest wine list. Enjoy Florence!

Focus on the cinghiale, the wild boar that is slow-cooked into a pot roast-like entree that is my favorite dish in Florence. Parione does a great job, served with polenta.

On a hunch I tried RS' recommendation Trattoria Sabatino along the river is Oltrarno. I've eaten there every visit since - and there have been several. Last year I took my godson, his brother, their wives and the mother there. It was just plain fun! They sat us at a large table that had 2 extra seats, which the lady informed us we were not to sit in. I knew, from past experience, that a single person or couple might be put there simply because they were empty seats. Nobody was put there - darn, I think that would have made my friends' experience in Florence all the better! Food was excellent, as always. Portions were very generous. Prices were more than reasonable. We had a blast! When it came time for dessert, nobody could decide so someone told the server: bring one of everything. Desserts were beautifully arranged on platters, lots of space was cleared for them, extra plates and forks appeared, nearby patrons toasted us and laughed with us. We finished every bite. Now, that's a memory of Florence well worth celebrating and sharing! Note to self: schedule Trattoria Sabatino for next year's trip.

Sadly, the patriarch of Trattoria da Rocco--Rocco himself--passed away a couple weeks ago. We had a wonderful luncheon with him in April of last year.
