We are leaving tomorrow for 10 days in Italy. Do we need to make restaurant reservations before we leave,or is it better to do when we arrive, or have the hotel do it? Or does it just depend on the restaurant? We don't want expensive or fancy. Thank you.
Yes, but then you miss out on intermixing with the locals (which is your choice, just sayin' -- it'd be like eating dinner at 3 or 4pm here). Before 7pm however, most restaurants will not be open.
Don't bother with reservations. You only need them for the exceedingly expensive, highest-end restaurants. If you are just looking for casual restaurants, just walk around until you find one... read the menu that will be posted outside, and then head in.
If you're going to a RS recommended restaurant he usually tells you if you need to make a reservation. We've been to several non-fancy restaurants where we were very happy we had made reservations.
(FWIW, Italians in the larger city eat very late by American standards, sometimes not showing up until 9 or 10 pm.)
Thanks. If we eat early (around 7 PM), is it less crowded?
