Can anyone recommend some really good Italian restaurants in the area of the new place we'll be staying in Prati? Thanks so much. The new address is Via Tommaso Campanella 41 scala D/9, Vaticano Prati, Rome, 00195. Do you think this is a good area? The fellow who booked it for me wasn't sure, but I would think it would be. Anywhere in Prati is good; right? Thanks for your help.
A few blocks from there, toward the Vaticano, is Osteria delle Commari. We have had several good meals there.
North of you is SiciliainBocca, a favorite of ours. Really excellent.
To the east, a 17-minute walk away, is La Pratolina, one of our top 3 pizzerias in Roma.
For all of these, a reservation is highly recommended. For La Pratolina, make your res at least 2 days in advance. They do two seatings, 19:30 and 21:30, as I recall.
Further away is Trattoria della Barchetta, a very old school Roman experience that our Italian friends liked a lot.
Wow! Thank you so much for the wonderful recommendations, Laurel! It sounds like our new lodging is in a much better area, closer to fabulous restaurants! I am starting to get excited. I think all this chaos with the first motel closing is a Blessing in Disguise! Yummmm!
We had some panini and dessert for lunch at Cantiani last fall that we quite enjoyed. We found this after we discovered the pace we wanted to try (see below) was not open for lunch. Does not seem like a typical tourist place to eat, but we sure enjoyed it.
Cantiani, Via Cola di Rienzo, 234, 00192 Roma RM, Italy
Also enjoyed La Pratolina for dinner. We had a salad, pizza, and fried veggie appetizer. If I recall we tried them for lunch but they did not open until 7 pm. So definitely a dinner place.
La Pratolina, Via degli Scipioni, 248, 00192 Roma RM, Italy
Both are less than a 20 min walk from the address you list.
Thanks so much for the awesome info, WhiteFuzzTravel! I appreciate it.
We ate at Trattoria ai Villini in Prati twice in July 2016. The first time the special was gnocchi - incredibly light, fluffy and delicious. The reason we went back the second night was so the rest of us could order our own gnocchi instead of stealing it from our only friend who was smart enough to order it the first time. Unfortunately, we were reminded that Thursdays is gnocchi day in Rome. Every restaurant makes it and Romans eat it on Thursdays. No gnocchi special for us on Friday. The other dishes were very good, and it's a great neigborhood joint, but the gnocchi were sublime. Try to make it here on a Thursday.
Location is Via Marcantonio Colonna, 48, a 20 minute walk from your hotel apparently. Not too bad, and there's great, tourist-free shopping on Via Cola di Rienzo more or less en route between the two. I'm sure there's a bus route or you can take a cab if you're keen to try this. The shopping really is great, with a mix of high-end stores, normal stores and outdoor clothing markets for cheap. There's a housewares store in which I had to lock my hands out of my purse, I wanted to take everything home.
Here's an informative blog post about Prati.
Sorry, the restaurant is local enough that there is no English translation flag at the top of their website. Google Translate can help, or just check out the pictures.
P.S. the closer we got to the Vatican, the worse we ate. I do suggest getting more into Prati to pick a restaurant.
Thank you so much, Nelly, for all the great tips and info! I'm having fun finding the FB page of the restaurants and messaging them. They are so good to respond. I can't wait to try a Pratolina pizza!
Trattoria at Villini sounds FABULOUS, Nelly! Can't wait to go there. I'm glad we are staying in Prati, now, based on your comments. Will make dining so much fun. La Pratolina explained to me that a Pratolina pizza (there is a specific pizza named "Pratolina," just like the name of the restaurant) that has speck on it. Margherita and Genovese pizzas sound great, too. What do you think is the best Italian pizza flavor?
And I can't wait to try Gnocchi on Thursday. That is the type of insider-tip we would never have known, without your amazing help, Nelly! Thanks again!
Assuming the Genovese one has pesto on it - I'd have to try that one. I had an amazing pesto and salmon pizza in Trastevere on that same trip at Trattoria da Vittorio. I haven't eaten at La Pratolina, sound amazing, so I suspect you can't go wrong. Make sure everyone in your party orders a different one so you can make your own call.
I hope you have a wonderful trip. I would stay in Prati again anytime over the city center. Do write up a restaurant review or two when you return!
Mmm, a salmon and pesto pizza sounds marvelous, Nelly. Do you have the link to the FB page of Trattoria da V? I can't find it. Yes, Genovese sounds awesome, too?
Do you have the link to the FB page of Trattoria da V? I can't find
it.
I'm guessing they don't have one. This is their website:
Thanks so much, Kathy. I actually DID find their FB page, and it's in English. Yippee. I was typing in "da" in the middle of the name, instead of "ai." With "ai," I found it.
Good job! They didn't have a FB logo on their webpage.
They don't look to have a menu on their FB page, though.
It’s a few blocks from you, but I loved Il Colibrí (Via Famagosta, 69-71, 00192 Roma RM, Italy) My first dinner was so good I went back and made reservations for another! Fantastic carbonara and pasta alla grecia. Great, family-run little place.
And I enjoyed the neighborhood fine. It certainly didn’t feel like I was missing out, and was well-connected via the Metro. It makes going to the Vatican Museum an absolute breeze.
Thanks for the recommendation, awrzesinski!
