Restaurant recommendations for the Pantheon area in Rome

We are leaving on Monday for Rome, and we will have 4 days on our own before we join our RS tour. We would love to get some recommendations for restaurants in the Pantheon area. We prefer smaller, locally run places. Bur we are open to any suggestions. Thank you.

For good Roman style pizza near the Pantheon, I like Taverna Le Coppelle. They also serve other dishes and have a great house red. Some have commented that they rush you a little, but I've never experienced that. Note that Roman style pizza has a thin wood-fired crust and less toppings than thicker American style pizza. If you don't mind walking 10 minutes, Pizzeria da Baffetto is excellent for Roman style pizza. I much prefer the original Baffetto to its sister pizzeria Baffetto 2 near Campo dei Fiori.

On our first trip to Rome we stayed at Albergo Abruzzi, looking out at the Pantheon. loved this area.
Before our trip we used the RS language book at dinner each night quizzing each other. We did this for about 6 weeks.
Hubby was much better than I was, but it really helped. He loved Rick's sense of humor with phrases like the one to tell a taxi driver "If you don't slow down I'm going to throw up" That made our taxi driver laugh for the whole trip.
The other favorite phrase was "It was better than my Mama's cooking"

Well, to answer your question, we found Hostaria La Nuova Capannina in the Pantheon area, just a few blocks away.
It's on a backstreet, we were trying to get away from the real touristy restaurants. The chefs were a man and his brother,
and one of the wives was our server. She spoke very basic English. The food was great, no rush. The house wine was good.
Since we had a good meal and really enjoyed everything, when she asked us "OK?" my hubby used his memory and came up with It was better than my Mama's cooking. She laughed and threw her arms around his neck and hugged him. I asked her if I could buy a plate. She went and talked to the chefs and came back with a plate and wine glass with the logo etched into it wrapped in clear cellophane paper with a bow. (This is the only kind of souvenir shopping I do. I have a number of plates from Rome.) We have been back on later trips and enjoyed it.

Have a Great Trip!
Mimi

Anyway, I would suggest La Nuova Capannina and which RS trip are you taking? We have taken 7 and planning another.

My family and friends just visited Rome in mid-June and stayed at Albergo de Senato with a room overlooking the Pantheon. This is a very touristy area, but walk a few minutes away and you can find some gems. Our favorite was Enoteca Corsi. One day our friends and college-aged girls wanted yet another pizza and my husband and I didn’t. I found Enoteca Corsi for lunch and the food was amazing and the owner, a lovely older gentleman, saw we like wine and kept pouring us new glasses (no charge). We liked it so much, we brought everyone back for dinner. Intimate place, fresh and simple food (if they have the Capon, you must try it), and because they also are a wine store a great selection. The servers speak English, but the owner doesn’t. A lovely local experience in a highly touristy area. Here is the url for the website: http://www.enotecacorsi.com.

There is also an amazing gelato place near the Pantheon (Punto Gelato at Piazza Sant Eustachio 47). We went on our last night in Rome at midnight and there was a line. Try the dark chocolate and Gorgonzola cheese for something truly different. Here is a link from Romewise that has all the details, plus other amazing gelato places: https://www.romewise.com/best-gelato-in-rome.html.

Have a great trip,
Sandy

Did you not get a Rome or Italy book as part of the tour package? It has many recommendations.

I went looking for Piazza Sant Eustachio 47 to buy coffee beans (best in the world) and stumbled across the cafe Sant Eustachio which is just across the road.

They were so nice, I was desperate to use the bathroom and even though I wasn’t intending to eat there, they let me use their customer one for free. Afterwards they offered me a glass of the best red wine I’ve ever had, “on the house”. Suffice to say I did end up buying dinner and more wine but they were very good; the food was excellent and the service totally charming. And, best wine ever. 10/10 recommendation

Thanks so much for these suggestions. These places sound perfect for us! Mimi, we are doing the Best of Southern Italy tour.
