Restaurant near Termini in Rome

What is the best restaurant near the Rome Termini train station? Our party of 5 needs to catch the last 8:50pm train to Florence on a weekday and will be touring all day in Rome. Probably hungry and casual ok. I read about a few restaurants on RS and just need some recommendations. Fresh home cooked pasta would be nice. I realize most good restaurants open at 7pm and we need to cut dinner short. I also will call or write to make advance reservations.

russ,

If you want to dine right at Termini station, you could always stop at the Roadhouse Grill. The menu selection is more North American than Italian, but I've always found the quality to be reasonably good. At least dining there you wouldn't have to be concerned about getting to the station to catch your train.

If you really want Italian food, you might try Trattoria I Leoni d' Abruzzo which is at Via Vicenza 44, at the corner of Via Palestro. It's right beside a Hostel I often stay at, and I've always found the food to be good quality. It's an easy eight minute (or so) walk from Termini (easier once you know the way). The sidewalk dining area is a bit "cramped" but even so I prefer to sit there rather than inside.

Buon Appetito!

Ken,

May I ask the name of the hostel? I generally stay near there at Via Palestro 55 but another option would be nice.

I apologize to russ for the thread drift. I will try and find the Pizza al taglio place we go to in the area. Super casual but also quite good if time becomes an issue and you need something quick.

Pizzeria del Secolo is the place I generally stop at once or twice.

Again, it quick super casual and not a nice sit down joint but if you run short of time, an option like this is a good one to have in the quiver. 8-10 min walk to the train.

Are you looking for white table cloth or pizza? You are correct about the 7pm opening but your don't need to be in Termini till about 8:35 so you have plenty of time.

I would like to find a white table cloth place, now that I know we have 1.5 hours to eat dinner. Pizza would be a fall back if we cannot get 7pm dinner reservations somewhere. Thanks to Ken and Mike for the suggestions so far.

Mike,

The Hostel I stay at in Rome is called Alessandro Palace which is at Via Vicenza 42. They have another property nearby called Alessandro Downtown, but I've never stayed there. I've always found the facilities to be good, and they've now added a small elevator which is nice. As I recall, the building also houses some private apartments.

Russ, one of the things you'll discover about eating at restaurants in Italy is that 1.5 hours at a white tablecloth place is considered a furiously rushed meal.

I enjoyed a very nice meal (great pizza oven but other food was delicious as well) at La Gallina Blanca at 3 Via Antonio Rosmini. This is the approximate address from Googlemaps, sorry can't find the card from there. It is about 3 blocks from the front of the Termini on a side street off Via Cavour. There was no one else speaking English when we went there, lots of tables of families and lots of assorted law enforcement people coming in to get stacks of carry out pizza. Our table was right by the door and right across from the oven. The food coming out all looked wonderful! We were staying at the Hotel Selene on Via Viminale and the desk clerk recommend this for a late dinner the night we arrived. What a welcome to Rome!

Thanks everyone for their tips and especially Susan. I decided to book a dinner reservation at Alessio. This ristorante was ranked #223 out of 8,060, which is pretty high on TripAdvisor given the geography and sheer number of eating places. The close proximity to Termini was important and the menu was appropriate, since it would be our last meal in Rome for awhile. They open at 6:30pm and allow reservations, where most other restaurants open at 7pm. I also liked their quick response via e-mail. I have been to Rome before and know that dinners are a 2+ hour affair. This will give (our party of five) time to catch the last train to Florence at 8:50pm. Since we booked 1st class, then we can recline, rest and digest our delicious meal after a memorable day in Rome. Life is Good!
