Restaurant / Food question

I am gluten intolerant. My bff has a lot of food allergies including celiac disease. We will be going to Rome in Oct. We have an Airbnb with full kitchen. Her food allergies require her to have only fresh meats (nothing cured) and fresh produce. I'm assuming that supermarkets and/or farmers markets will have those items?

Also, since she wont be able to eat out and I'm not one for dining alone (shes willing to go to dinner with me without eating but I would feel bad!) , is ordering food to go something that can be done there? So I could bring the food back to our apt to eat while she eats her allergy friendly meals she cooks herself?

We are staying near the Colosseum so if anyone has any supermarket or farmers market suggestions etc thst would be great too!

Thank you!

I suggest contacting your Airbnb host with these questions. There's probably a butcher shop nearby where fresh meats can be purchased and a store that specializes in fresh produce. Those types of businesses still flourish in Italy. Several restaurants in Florence offer takeout if you ask, especially at lunch hour, so I suspect it would be the same in Rome. There surely must be a few such restaurants near your apartment.

Italy has the highest percent of celiacs in Europe and they are at the vanguard, probably in the world, in gluten free foods. Below some European websites on where to find gluten free foods (restaurants and stores). In any case most restaurants have gluten free choices. My cousin’s daughter is a celiac and eats out almost daily in Rome.

As far as fresh produce and meat, that is available at any local grocery store, butcher’s, greengrocer’s, or farmers market.

There are a number of takeout places, search for "Tavola Calda", or literally "hot table". They serve hot dishes to go. Supermarkets may also have the equivalent, just like in the US.

You might want to buy laminated cards from a company like Select Wisely that will explain in Italian what you can & cannot eat. They have standard cards but they will also do custom orders for multiple allergies/medical conditions.
