restaurant advice for Sicily?

My daughter is spending 5 weeks in Siracusa through a college program and is looking for Rickniks' advice on places to eat. The apartments and classes are in Ortygia, but they will also be doing side trips on weekends so recommendations elsewhere in Sicily also welcome. As a college student, she's looking for low-budget options - and as her mom, I'm glad... Thanks for any advice!

Hi Kathleen.
Coincidentally, I just today read a food article in the Globe and Mail newspaper from Toronto, Canada. There is an article there from June 2009 that is titled "Taking a bite (or two) out of Sicily", by Beppi Crosariol. Syracuse is mentioned and the food descriptions sure got my mouth watering. We'll be going there next Spring. Hope your daughter finds the great food that Sicily is famous for. Cheers, SHerry

We had some fantastic meals on Ortigia last month. Spaghetteria do Scogghiu was our favorite meal in all of Sicily. We also enjoyed Sicilia in Tavola. Unfortunately since the dollar is so weak against the euro, it's harder to find low budget options. There's a lovely food market on the north side of the island during the day, so if the apartments have kitchens and she likes to cook, that would be a great way to save some money.
