Resort near Livorno

Hello all! It's been a while since I've been here, so I'm quite excited to be planning this Italy trip 10 years after my last one!

This time around, I'm going with my parents (in their 60s) and sister's family (with a 1 and 3-year old). For a week, we'll be staying in Chianti, exploring small towns around there. This is very different for me, as I'm used to traveling around- it's a challenge trying to stop myself from adding places to my list of towns to visit- my current debate is whether I should include Assisi or not for a day trip. Any thoughts?

We then have 3 nights in Livorno, as my parents wanted some days on the coast. In my research, I noticed that it might not be the best place to be if we're seeking a couple of relaxing days by a beach/pool. We're flying in and out of Florence, so we're looking at somewhere that's not too far away, where we could stay at a hotel with a pool, that ideally is quite close to the beach. This appears to be a tall order, so I'm wondering if any of you might know of a place that would fit our need.

Thank you in advance!

Julie,
I don't think the beaches are that great in that part of Italy. We visited Rimini when we lived in Germany and it was not good at all.

We plan to visit Umbria (including Assisi, Perugia and Spoleto) next May. I would recommend that area of Italy.
If you haven't been to Lucca, not far from Livorno, or Sienna, closer to Florence those cities are wonderful.

About 30 miles north of Livorno is Viareggio which has excellent sand beaches and lots to to see with an open air market, an active harbor, a long lungomare with shops and restaurants and lots of strolling people. There are several large parks with amusements and kiddie rides. It also has good direct train service to Firenze.
Contiguous to the north is Lido di Camaiore which has a more sedate air but still with good services.
