Has anyone used the Basilica's own advance reservation system? I just read about it. You pay 1 euro per person, and are given an entrance time and can skip the line. We're considering this because we'll be there in mid-June with the crowds. Necessary? Helpful?
I used the reservation system (I think). At least I paid the 1E. The line I found was well over 200 folks long when I got there, and I believe it was the correct line (guard I asked was grumpy... although one of the other guards later commented on what a jerk that guy was, so I don't think grumpy is the rule). Don't know what the other line must have been like; didn't see another line. I go to daily Mass anyway, so I ended up visiting by staying after Mass; that was a much better solution for me. I was there at the end of Sept last year.
However, since it's only 1E, I'd suggest paying in case it's helpful, since it's so crowded.
I reserved for June, too. Guess I'll see if I wasted my money or not.
I just use the bag-check method...'cuz I'm cheap. Hey, that €1,00 = ~ 2 restroom trips ;-) I also don't have to be there any particular time.
Yeap, use Rick Steves' bag check method. Bring a backpack, they'll ask you to leave at the bag check (free of charge, maximum 1 hour) nearby and show your bag check card at the entrance and they'll let you in straightaway. Maximum 3 other pax can follow you in.
Yes, the bag check totally works. We did that, and we we walked right in, we spied a guy in the ginormous regular line with RS book tucked under his arm!! Guess he didn't read it.
We also used the "baggage check" trick. The church to check your bags is around the corner from St. Marks...
James, I try to use the 'private' restrooms (meaning museums, restaurants, hotels with big ol' lobby restrooms) in the expensive locales. I'll save that 1€ for a biergarten. I'll need it.
