Reserving a Train from Rome to Naples

It is now late March and I will be travelling with my family of 4 from Rome to Naples (and then on to Sorrento) on July 9. I seem to be having a hard time on the TrenItalia website reserving and purchasing tickets. It is not showing me any train timetables/schedules. Is it too early to book a reservation?

There is a schedule change every year in mid June. They will slowly start adding the faster train schedules about two weeks before that but the entire system should be updated by mid June. Until then, you won't be able to book the tickets you're looking for. It won't be a problem. Just look at the schedule for next week to get an idea of the price and frequency of trains. In mid may, start checking to see if they've uploaded the route you're looking for. Donna

Hi Noelle, I have done that trip several times (in July) and never booked ahead. I am a planner and like to plan and organize everything before I get there but in this case it really is not necessary. When you get to the train station you just go to the self serve kiosk and it is easy to get your tickets within a half hour to 45 min. before you want to leave. You can even have your Rome hotel check the times a day or two before.
Enjoy!!!

Don't try to get tickets or check the schedule from Roma to Sorrento. You can't do it. The train from Napoli to Sorrento is a private line called the Circumvesuviana and Trenitalia doesn't have any information on them. Circumvesuviana is a local commuter train - see the Rick Steves book for a fuller description - which runs frequently. Look on Trenitalia for Roma to Napoli. Happy planning....

Once they do update the train schedule, it is worthwhile to book in advance if possible. THere are reduced fares available for the Frecce (high speed train) in advance, and we paid 19 euros for Roma to Naples instead of 60.
The trenitalia website does not work properly if you let google translate the page. I would open two separate browser windows and have the translation in on one, and my request for tickets on the other.

Noelle, the Trenitalia website is undergoing some changes and there's the issue of the bi-annual schedule changes. So you may have to be more patient than usual buying tickets online. You might read this article, Booking on the Trenitalia Website. It's been re-done for the Trenitalia website changes. If you don't mind getting locked to specific, dates, times and trains ... As suggested by Nigel, look for trains from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. We just scored a MINI promotional fare on this route in late June for €9.

My family and I reserve the train seat thru Rick Steve's site by calling up. We got a FLEXI ticket - Eurail one country pass for 4 adults. As for the ticket to ride we got it at the train station. This can be crazy. We were in a couple of lines until I notice a little booth with a man and he helped us out by getting 4 Global Pass tickets By our next train trip we were pros
