My friends told me that in the past they had reserved tickets, but asked to take an earlier train than their reserved train. Is this true? I would like to hear your experiences with this.

We are not hugely experienced but this is what we learned in Italy a few weeks back. If you have a seat reservation, you need to make the change at the ticket window but if you are travelling without a specific seat our experience was that you could be quite flexible with your ticket. BUT ALWAYS remember to get your ticket embossed in one of the little machines, before you board the train. Once you have a stamp, you must finish the travel on that ticket to the paid for destination, within 24 hours. Happy travels, we certainly learned to love the trains.
