Reserve train to Orvieto?

In June we will be in Rome for several days and want to take the regional train to Orvieto for a one day up and back trip. Should I reserve train tickets online now? Do these trains sell out? Thanks!

No. Buy when you get there. Regional trains are open seating. Never sell out.

Don't forget to validate the ticket before you board the train! We saw several people who did not, had to pay €50 fine each. And "I'm a tourist" does NOT get you out of the fine.

Many of the trains on that route are Regionale trains, and in that case no reservations are possible and there are no discounts for advance purchase. It's just as easy to buy tickets locally, either from a Kiosk or staffed ticket window. However you MUST remember to validate (time & date stamp) the tickets prior to boarding on the day of travel or you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!

Some of the trains on that route have one change and some involve a Bus transfer from Orte. Be sure to pick a direct departure! You can see all the solutions on the Trenitalia website. Current Regionale fares are listed at €7.80 PP each way, and these trains never sell out.

If you're certain about using only regional trains, you can buy both your tickets to Orvieto and the return tickets in Rome. Just be sure not to validate your return tickets until shortly before boarding the train back to Rome. If you want to keep your options open, then buy the return tickets in Orvieto. Note that Intercity (IC) trains from Orvieto to Rome are more expensive and require a seat reservation. If the IC train is fully booked (which happened to me once), the ticket seller may, at his or her discretion, sell you IC tickets with no seat assignment. In that case, you stand until a seat becomes available.
