Sadly can't make an English tour work because of the early time. Do I still need reservations just to visit the palace?

No you do not. We walked right in with our Venice Museum Pass in hand. We did not do a tour.

You can also buy a ticket at the door either at the palace or at the Correr Museum across the square, which is automatically covered by the same Combo Ticket (the minimum purchase option).

You can buy the tickets online and save your time of standing in the ticket buying line. That line itself can be quite long in season.

The Rick Steves guidebook was sufficient for us and we went by ourselves.

If Doge land has a long line, the Correr Museum will not. Nice way to jump the Doge line. Great Rick tip from the book that worked great.

normal ticket will get you in, no reservation. the secret tour does require reservation, which is not covered by the general admission ticket.
