Reservations for Vatican

We are looking at going to visit the Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel on a Saturday-do we need to make reservations? Is it worth it? Also-what is the best time of day? I've heard later in the afternoon is better....

Also-we will be there on the last sunday of the month-"Free Entrance"-is it worth it? It will be the last Sunday in May...

From what I've observed, Free Sunday is very busy.

Some people have posted that afternoons are better. I would suggest getting a reservation to avoid the long line.

You cannot book entry tickets for free Sunday and will need to wait in line with everyone else. These lines are very long, even in the afternoon. The last entry on Sunday is 12:30 with the museums closing at 2.

I would suggest going on Saturday if you can, Just book entry tickets through the official site. The museums and chapel are always crowded but later in the day most of the larger tour groups are done so you won't have to deal with that.

I've done Free Sunday - and NEVER again. The hours are limited and the lines are long. Some people get in line at 11.30 AM and never get in - as they close the entry doors at 12.30 PM. Most guide services refuse to operate on free Sundays, and you only have to go once to see why. I liken it to cattle being herded. It's just not the best way to see the Museums.

That said, I would agree with Donna; Buy your tickets through the Vatican online service in advance.

It only costs a few Euro more and you get to pick when you enter, rather than standing in line for an hour.. or more! Saturdays are the 2nd busiest day of the week, so I'd definitely buy skip-the-line tickets if your schedule is tight. This article talks a little about visiting the Vatican and has some links that might help you - Good Luck!
