Reservations for the high speed trains?

Hi,
Is it necessary to make reservations for these trains. We are in Venice and want tdo a day trips on our own. Maybe a few. 5 days in Venice. And than our trains to Florence 4 nights and Rome. Should we get specific reservations or can we get the train tickets on those days. Dates are Sept 17 -Oct. 4. Thanks,
Mike

If timing is important to you, reserve. You can also get discounts on some routes and fares if you book in advance. I would certainly book Venice to Florence and Florence to Rome. Your day trips you can wing.

IMO, the only reason to reserve in advance is to take advantage of any discounts that might be available. However, discount tickets come with restrictions and a total lack of flexibility. And, sometimes, depending on schedule and other factors the fast trains may only be a half hour or hour faster than a Regionale Train. Sometimes I willing to trade off some time for flexibility.

If you going this month as one of your earlier questions indicated, you probably are too late for any discount so I would buy them in the station as needed.

You can definitely buy day of, but the cost is the highest it will be. As an example, I booked tickets from Firenze to Napoli next month in business class for €23.90. On the day of that would have been €89. The primary benefit to buying in advance is discounted tickets.
