Reservations for museums Rome.

Heading to Rome May 1, and was wondering what must see museums need advance ticket purchase ow. Have done the Borghese, so I know about that one. My visits were pre-covid so not sure what has changed in terms of booking in advance. Any advice welcome. Thanks

I believe there are two questions here:

  • Which museums are so popular they might sell out or have really long lines if you waited to buy your ticket after arrival?

  • Which museums currently have a policy requiring prebooking of timed tickets, at least on the day of the week you might want to visit?

The difficulty is that the answer to either question could change between now and May 1, so the only truly reliable information source is the individual museums' websites.

As to the first question, I know from personal observation that the Vatican Museum morning tickets are mostly selling out well in advance. Especially if you expect to spend a lot of time there, you should probably look immediately at ticket availability for your dates. I don't think the Museums will be less busy in early May than they were in early/mid-March.

The Colosseum requires online booking. You cannot walk up and purchase a ticket.

On May 1 I would reserve any museum that can be reserved, there will be large crowds. Teens going to the Unions' concert in the evening plus tourists from other EU countries.

Ok, I’ll check out the colosseum. We actually arrive May 1, later in the day and staying in the Trastevere area. I did know it was a holiday. Should a reservation be made for a dinner, due to the holiday and if so, any recommendations in the area?
