Hi all: My husband and I are staying in the Cinque Terre June 24th and 25th (Sun. & Mon.) and haven’t had any luck reserving a room. I am wondering if we just show up early in the day if we will be able to find something. I see that the 24th is St. John the Baptist festival in Riomaggiore and Monterosso. I’m worried we will be sleeping on the beach!
Yes, I think you will have a problem. We just returned from Italy ..were there for 1 month. We were in Vernazza the last week in May and saw a lot of people who came without reservations and were very disappointed. It is very crowded now and much harder to just show up and find a room. Several suggestions. If you stay in Vernazza, email Tonnino Basso ( email in Rick's Italy book). We stayed there and it was wonderful. He only has 4 rooms, but they are the best. If he is full, maybe he can get you in somewhere else. Whatever you do, try to find a room before you go. If you do stay in Vernazza, definitely eat at Il Pirata at the top of the town, Wonderful breakfasts and dinners. The 2 brothers that own the place are wonderful .
I highly recommend getting your hands on a Rick Steves book--he lists some places for the 5T that don't book in advance, like apts in Riomaggiore, etc. (although if possible I would reserve a room, especially with the festival). If you wing it, definitely show up early in the day and ask/look around (I saw some 'apt for rent' signs). You should also try the 'less touristy' towns like Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Corniglia. I stayed in Manarola and loved it! Good luck.
