Reservation required?

We will be traveling by car from Munich down through Italy for 11 days starting Aug. 12. It is impossible to know where we will be on any given day. What are our chances of finding a room without a reservation?

Very good in the smaller towns unless you hit a festival or something similar. One thing to do is IF you know you next stop is to ask your current hotel for a recommendation at the next stop. They might even call ahead for you.

Some things to keep in mind: #1by "we" are you just a couple who needs a double/twin room, or a family who needs a triple or quad? It can be more difficult to find those larger rooms with more beds on short notice, so you need to keep a RS guidebook really nearby and have 3 or 4 likely properties in mind no matter what (whether you are a couple or a family. I don't particularly like not knowing where I will be stopping for the night and wasting my hardearned vacation time looking for available and suitable rooms, so, as previous poster mentioned, if you can plan at least a day or so in advance you may be able to call ahead or have your current hotelier make recommendations or call ahead for you. #2I would be all means try to have a reservation for 15 Aug (Ferragosto), the festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, I think. And depending where you anticipate being then, you may be required to have a 2-3 night minimum (especially in more resort-oriented areas). This is a national holiday and can be a very big deal. #3Bear in mind that most of August, particularly from Ferragosto onward is hallowed as vacation time for most Italians, Germans, French and others......so expect MANY vacationing Europeans in any major resort areas (Cinque Terre, Rimini, Viareggioanything remotely beachy or resort-focused).
