Hope someone can help. I’m at my wits end!
In April I reserved an apartment in Verona for 6 nights in September.
Signed an electronic contract and paid a deposit of 50%.
Knew that balance was due 30 days prior to check-in date of September 8.
I have not received an invoice for the balance from the rental company..Canguro Properties.
I have tried communicating with them via several emails and also using their contact form on the website. I started doing this last Saturday, August 5. No response.
Today I’ve called both the phone number in Italy and the one in London. In Italy, there was a recorded message in Italian which I didn’t understand. In London there was a recorded message asking me to leave a message. So I did.
At this point I’m very concerned that we will lose our apartment reservation and as well as our deposit as we haven’t cancelled our reservation nor paid our balance.
I can’t find anywhere in the contract that says where or how to pay the balance.
Anyone else ever had this problem? And solved it?
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
What were the instructions in the contract about paying the balance?
All it says is is:
“BALANCE DUE: Remainder is due 30 days to check-in date.”
Nothing else. I was expecting to receive an email from them with instructions.
How did you pay the initial deposit?
If it was by credit card, I suspect they could (will) just charge the remainder to the card.
If payment was made some other way, I cannot think of anything to do, beyond what you are doing.
Thanks for the suggestion re credit card. I’ll check to see if a charge has been made.
I would be a bit leery of a place that failed to respond to emails or phone for published contact info. They obviously responded quickly when you inquired about renting. I suppose to, it is August, I know in the corporation I worked at, we assumed the European sites were just "unavailable" during August, let's hope that is the case. Otherwise, I would worry more about my deposit, rather than how to give them more money.
Deposit was put on credit card. We checked online and nothing has been charged yet as a balance by this company.
I’m definitely uneasy. Not only about the money but where we’re staying for six nights in September if this falls through. Guess I’ll start looking for a backup.
I’ll return to the forum whenever there is a resolution!
Thanks for all the great replies.
Did you check the company for its reputation or ratings? Any complaints?
August is vacation time in Italy, I don’t know if London closes down. It might be a really small company that is closed for summer vacation
Still no reply to my calls or emails. Hoping I wasn’t taken in by a really big scam. The company looked good when I was checking out places to stay in Verona. I had originally found the apartment on either Booking.com or Airbnb but I went directly to the company to make the reservation.
I’m going to resume the international phone calls and e-mails starting again on Monday with an optimistic hope that everyone was on vacation this week and I’ll receive a reply. HA!
I’m also looking for another place to stay in Verona or even Mantua or Vicenza. I thought the prices were high when I was searching in April. They are worse now so close to the date obviously.
Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. I appreciate your thoughts.
August 15 is a holiday in Italy and since it's a Tuesday, many folks will take Monday off. The Italian management listed on the website seems to be a real company, so don't despair. Many Italian businesses haven't adopted email into their ordinary communication operations.
Mrs Funky, if they are not on holyday this week you can bet they are on holiday the next one. The 15th falls on a Tuesday this year.
I must admit I am not sure I understood what you are worried about and why.
have you checked your spam folder?
Mike..thanks so the information re the holiday.
Dario..I’m worried because I haven’t been able to pay the balance due on our apartment rental in September. It was due august 7 or 8. No email sent from company re how to pay. They also didn’t automatically charge to the credit card we used for the balance. So I’m concerned that we will lose our rental.
Syd…yes, I’ve checked . Nothing there either.
Again, thanks to all for your ideas. Will keep trying to contact them.
If you’re still looking for a place in Vicenza, check out RELAIS SANTA CORONA. (We’re staying there in October.) It’s a boutique hotel that got good reviews. Just checked on Booking.com and it looks as if they still have rooms available in September. Good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion Susan. I checked and unfortunately, rooms are available for only the last two nights of our stay in Verona. It looks beautiful and I will keep it in mind .
Vicenza? Might I suggest that you contact the hotel directly? Sometimes there are rooms available that booking.com cannot book.
Uh Oh.
Their facebook page (which hasn't been updated since 2020) has several complaints about their London properties.
Their Tripadvisor review - the first review is a complaint about an Italian property - same issue you are having.
One other thought: if you are an airbnb member, you can "contact the host" - use any dates that will work - then state your issue. They will probably respond, as airbnb is strict about responses from their hosts.
Good luck, so sorry for your troubles! So hard to know who to trust...
That is indeed worrisome. However, the reviews on booking.com (most recent is April 2023) give no indication of a problem. It could well be that the upcoming holiday is the issue, so give it another week before you do anything drastic. I have found some apartment owners, particularly in Italy, to be rather casual about the timing of final payment.
In the meantime, sending a message through another platform, like AirBnB is a good idea.
I sent a message through Airbnb this afternoon. Says the host replies within 24 hours. I did receive a standard reply confirming they had received my message and would get back to me soon. I did notice that the daily rate for the week after our reservation is almost double what we contracted to pay.
Thanks again to all for your suggestions and comments. I really appreciate your advice.
