Requirements for Retuning to U.S. From Italy

Hello, my husband and I will be traveling to Rome Italy on August 1st and returning to Los Angeles, via JFK on August 8th. I understand that Italy no longer requires a negative Covid test for our travel and that as of right now, the U.S. also no longer requires a negative Covid 19 test. However, we are traveling on American Airlines and I see from their app and website, that a negative test is "recommended" for returning back to the U.S. as well as filing out a Attestation Form. Has anyone recently traveled back to the U.S. from Italy? What was needed to return? Did you still take a Covid test in Italy to return home? If so, was it a "at home" test or did you find a clinic in Italy to take the test? Apologies for all the question, but this is my first time travelling internationally and since things change I just want to make sure I understand what is needed to come back home.

I flew back from Italy a few weeks ago on United. The only thing they required was a boarding pass and a passport!

I think what American Airlines is trying to get across is that before you board a plane with several hundred others, have the courtesy to take a test before you fly. If you are knowingly ill, you should not travel...that can be said for the flu, or other contagious diseases.

The attestation form is a simple two or three questions, basically asking if you have been exposed, or have symptoms. Sometimes it is a form, sometimes it is just questions at check-in.

We flew back from Italy July 3. Absolutely all that was required was a boarding pass and passport. No forms to fill out for the government, no attestation, no COVID test. (I believe the attestation used to go with the COVID test).

However, I strongly recommend you wear a good quality kn95 mask in the airport and on your flight. I tested myself the day before our flight home and was negative. However I began to feel sick (body aches, scratchy throat, cough, congestion) during the flight, as did my husband. We tested ourselves as soon as we arrived home and we were both positive. We wore masks but most of our fellow passengers did not, and I’m sure some of the folks who were sitting near us came to regret that decision. COVID is everywhere, and guaranteed you will be on a flight with people who have it - whether they realize it when they board or not. (We are vaxxed and double boosted and I had tested negative the day before the flight, and we still ended up unintentionally flying with COVID).
