Reputable car rental dealers at Milan Malpensa?

We will either be flying into Malpensa or arriving by train from Switzerland. We are planning to rent a car to go to Lake Como, since the wedding we'll be attending doesn't really have reliable transportation options. Are there any rental companies you would recommend, or not recommend?

We're hoping to get an automatic, since our last adventure with a manual was pretty interesting :) Also, what is the insurance called again that we should get? We definitely used it last time when the company said we had damage to the car.

Thanks!
Theresa

We always rent our cars thru AutoEurope.com
A US based consolidator with excellent customer service and usually the best rates
Check AutoEurope.eu as well-sometimes cheaper
Stick with the major agencies-Hertz, Europcar, Avis, etc

You can see what’s available and research prices on their website
They also have a toll free number and are extremely knowledgeable and helpful

You shouldn’t have any problem getting an automatic at the airport
Take the full insurance and you don’t have to worry about anything-it’s money well spent for peace of mind

Be sure to do your homework regarding driving in Italy
All drivers must have an IDP which you can get at your local AAA

There are dozens of threads here about renting cars and driving in Italy
Please search this forum for lots of info

ETA
If arriving by train you don’t need to go to airport to pick up
Milano Centrale has car rental agencies

We recently rented from Europcar at MXP. We rented through Autoeurope choosing the extended cover. It all went perfectly from pickup to return at FCO.
If you do go with Europcar join their loyalty program and link your reservation to your account. Then do online check in before you arrive, I think it was available 30 hrs before your scheduled pick up time. When you check in at the kiosk at Europcar MXP your name will go up on a priority screen and you get to skip the line.
At least it worked like that in May.
I forgot to add that the price dropped significantly about 3 weeks before we left so do keep an eye on it.

We've been renting directly from Europcar in Italy (many locations including airports) for many years without any problems.

AutoEurope does require payment when you book but you can and should always keep an eye on the rates. if you see a price drop you can easily cancel and rebook.

We rebooked a few times. I always like to lock in a car early then rebook when they drop. Same for Hawaii.
