Going from Rome to Assisi for three nights. While in Assisi, we'd like to rent a car for 1-2 days to explore the less train/bus accessible Tuscan towns.
1) Is the Perugia airport the closest place to get a rental car?
2) Would renting the car outside Rome (Orvieto) for the trip make more sense instead of taking the train to Assisi and then renting?
I appreciate any insights!
Every little village is accessible by bus.
Bob -- Thanks for the quick response! But I thought it could be pretty slow going by bus. Since we only have two days, returning to Assisi at night, I wanted to consider the car option. Besides just meandering, places we're interested in are: Subiaco Monastery, Siena, Civita di Bagnoregio, and perhaps San Gimignano. I'd be happy to hear that we could get to these places w/out killing the whole days on busses.
You will just love staying in Assisi. However, check with your hotel about having a car. When we were there, it looked like the personal cars could not go to many parts of the main town. There were mini-buses that moved you up and down the steep hills. Check with your hotel.
Good point, Larry. We're staying at the St. Anthony's Guest House up by Piazza Mateo. They have parking for 3 euros a night. On the other hand, if we do use a car, we might be able to take it out early and bring it back late on the same day. -- If I decide I need it and if I can figure out where to rent it.
Yep, you're up on top. You can take the Line C bus from the train station to their last stop at the top. You'll be close. You can buy the bus ticket in the little shop next to the train station. Once you get a car, it does look like you can drive up there.
We drove to Assisi and found that you can drive into town from either end but cant continue thru.We parked about a block from our hotel and then the owner drove with me back down and up the other side. There was parking available.
