Renting bicycles in Tuscany?

We are going to be taking the bus from Florence to San Gimignano for 2 nights and I'm wondering if it's possible to rent bikes there to get out into the countryside? I don't want a bike tour, just to rent on our own. If anyone knows how far it would be to bike to Volterra or what the road is like, I would appreciate any advice on that as well.

Tuscany is hilly. The road to San Gimignano is very hilly, and there are lots of tourist buses. You need to be very secure on a bike to ride there. that being said, I know you should be able to rent bikes in Florence for rides out of there. When we were in Florence, we bought a bike jersey from Florence by Bike (nice David on the back). Here's the link to their site....I didn't check it out completely, but I think you can rent bikes by the day from them, and not have to take a tour.
One advantage to a day tour though...you know where you are going, you have a sag support, lunch is sometimes included and you probably would get a wine tour/tasting included. Just saying... http://www.aboutflorence.com/rent-bike-in-Florence.html

Claudia, Sadly the Hershey factory closed down a few years ago when they shifted their production line to Mexico. Since then it has reopened on a much smaller scale under the ownership of Sconza Candies. I knew many people in town who had been Hershey employees for 20+ years who lost not only their jobs, but their homes as well.
