We are renting a car in Rome and returning it 9 days later in Venice and we will be on foot in Venice before we fly home a couple of days later. Would it be preferable to return the car in the city or at the airport in Venice?

We will be renting a car in Rome (on our way out) and dropping it off in Venice 9 days later as well!
We are dropping our car off at Piazzale Roma when we arrive in Venice. From there, you just hop on the Vaporetto (or a water taxi, or even walk, depending upon where you're staying).
Much easier than dropping off at the airport ...

Great! What a coincidence! Thanks for your input. We were thinking of picking up the car at the train terminal when we leave Rome, but are a little concerned about the traffic. We are leaving on Saturday when traffic will be lighter. What are you doing?

We have arranged to have Sixt deliver our rental car (actually, a minivan) to our hotel (Hotel Smeraldo, in Centro Storico). Hopefully, this will work out. I have gotten differing reports on whether the rental car can be delivered to this hotel, since it's in an area that is restricted to "official" vehicles only. But, we have been assured that it will be OK, so we're crossing our crossables!
We are leaving Rome on a Monday morning (June 30th) - right in the heart of rush hour. Yikes!

Just be cautious that in Italy, most car rental places are closed on Sundays and open on Saturdays from 8:00am-Noon.
