I'm considering renting a car in Salerno for a trip to Cilento. I'd need an automatic car. Are the rental agencies big enough to guarantee that an automatic car is available if it's reserved in advance? I'm worried that their fleets are smaller and that they might run out of automatic cars, even if reserved in advance. Would welcome hearing from others' experiences.

No personal experience in Salerno, but Salerno is not a small place, so they should be able to accommodate your request. A lot will depend on the size of the car you rent. If you rent a small economy car, generally it is likely to be a manual transmission car. Half of new cars sold nowadays in Italy are automatic, and the larger the vehicle segment the higher the chance it will be automatic.
