Renting a house in Sicily

Wondering where to rent a country house in Sicily? Going in the spring next year.

We want a location that is great for day trips in a rental car.

We welcome suggestions.

Depends on where you want to visit. Sicily is too large to be visited from one single location.

For the west side (Palermo and Trapani provinces), there are many farmhouses all over. I would look for something close to Segesta, or Scopello/Castellammare (if you prefer the coast). That area is well served by freeways.

Years ago I ate here (did not stay overnight however, as I stayed at a B&B in Scopello). In Western Sicily there are numerous spots to visit, like Erice, Trapani, Segesta, Selinunte, Marsala, San Vito lo Capo, Scopello, Castellammare, Zingaro Reserve. The Trapani province is the province with the largest production of grapes in Italy, in case you are interested in wine tasting.

In South-Eastern Sicily, I stayed at the "Masseria Sul Mare", an agriturismo between Syracuse and Avola. But of course there are those types of accommodations everywhere. I would decide what you want to visit, then use Google Maps to locate farmhouses.

In Sicily many farmhouses are refurbished ancient complexes called agriturismo, or, more often in Sicily, "Baglio" or "Masseria". They tend to be huge, as those farmhouses traditionally housed entire extended families of many components. Now those tourist accommodations have been divided up in multiple lodgings of several apartments within the farm complex, so it is possible that you won't be the only guests, unless you are going in a very large party.
