We would like to rent a car to tour the Tuscany region after staying in Rome but don't want to deal with driving in the city. Does anyone have a suggestion on taking public transit to an end point out of the city or where would be the best place (out of the city fray) to rent a car then drive north towards Sienna. Thank you!
When using the GPS, note that Siena has only one "n"! It was for entirely different (cruise) reasons, but we rented in Civitavecchia. Orvieto is a beautiful visit, and well away from Rome with easy trains. Are you including Florence on this trip? We also visited Viterbo by car, but it's not as nice as Orvieto. Have you explored the Trenitalia website yet? If you post again, give the month of the year. It's important for European travel.

We took a taxi to Ciampino and rented a car there for the drive to Tuscany (Montalcino). It was very easy driving out of that airport. There was no way we would drive in Rome--had experience with that in Florence and Siena once and decided never to attempt that again.
Go to the rental car websites and pick the one that is most to your liking. Tuscany is north of Rome, so you may want places that aren’t on the opposite side.
These are the two companies I use the most in Italy.

We lived in Parioli, east of Villa Borghese, and while I hated driving in Rome, it was easy to escape from Parioli or even the Nomentana neighborhood. You can take a bus, taxi, or tram to a car rental location to the east and hop on the GRA without too much trouble.
I rented near Tiburtina rail station. It wasn't difficult getting out of the city from there.
