My husband and I will be traveling from Varenna to Castelrotto in May of this year. From there we will be traveling to Venice, Florence, and then to Tuscany. We want to use trains where possible. We have planned all along to rent a car in Florence to travel to Tuscany and then turn it in before we go on to Rome. However, it seems difficult to get to Castelrotto by public transit. Would we make our lives harder by renting a car 2 different times?

I don't think it will be harder to rent two different times/locations. I think it is preferable to renting for a long period and having the expense and hassle of a car when you don't need one.

To see Castelrotto you can take a bus from Bolzano. but to see the rest of Dolomites it is best to rent a car.
I found it very diff to rent a car in Varenna and ended up renting from Como town. Or you could train back Milan to Venice see Venice then rent your vehicle for the Dolomites. Renting 2x is not a prob IMO.

The only thing to consider is money. See if one long-term rental is more or less expensive than the two short-term ones. Don't forget to factor in parking for the days when the long-term car will sit idle. Twenty-five euro per day is a rough number for the cities - - smaller towns will be less. Nothing else is an issue.
