renting a car in venice marco polo to go to croatia and much more

Ciao amici,
My trip to Italy begins in 3days and I can't believe I still have unanswered questions. I am hoping someone out there can give me a quick response.
After two weeks exploring Italy my husband and I will be training from Florence to Venice. In Venice we are hoping to rent a car at the train station (or somehow get to the Marco Polo airport if that's important to do.) We will be driving to Istria to visit friends and will be there for 4 nights. We will then return to Venice as we are flying out of Marco Polo Airport around 4:30 to head to Barcelona.

My questions: Can I rent a car at the train station in Venice and return it at the Marco Polo Airport? Should I go ahead and make those rental car arrangements now, from the US (it seems that's what everyone advises) If I can't rent at the train station, how hard is it to get from the train station to the airport? Also, I mapquested directions on how to drive to Istria (we are going to Omag) Has anyone had experience driving from Venice to Istria?

Grazie,
Sherri

There are no car rentals at the station in Venice. You are at the water's edge. You can take a bus to the airport. Assume you are flying out of Venice at 1630 or 4.30 pm. If not you have another problem.

You can rent a car at Piazella Roma, there are several options including Hertz. Reserve from the US before your trip.

I hope you have the international drivers permit - get one from AAA before you leave.

Good luck and enjoy the trip!

And make sure you are authorized to take the car into Croatia. There may be additional charges or insurance requirements.

If you want a certain type of car, such as small and cheap, or with automatic transmission, then your best bet is to reserve ahead, not to take potluck. It's also possible that some cars would have the authorization to cross to Croatia and others not. I did not have any particular trouble driving in Slovenia or northern Croatia, except that coastal traffic was very heavy in August.
