Renting a car in Tuscany?Umbria

In November after our RS" Best of Venice, Florence and Rome tour" we plan to do some touring on our own starting with Siena and then to Assisi as our base. We want to rent a car and travel to the Tuscan and Umbrian towns. Any suggestions? Is it cheaper to rent in Siena and then drive to Assisi or take train to Assisi? Or is it better to get car in Assisi?

I’m a little confused at exactly what you want to do. Spend a few nights in each city and visit towns around both? If so, rent a car in Siena and drive to Assisi. The longer rental should be less expensive than two short rentals. You would also save time not having to return 1 vehicle, take the train and then rent another vehicle. It’s also faster to drive from Siena to Assisi than going by rail. The cost of fuel is also less than 1 rail ticket.

Since your tour ends in Rome, take the train from Rome to Assisi and then go to Siena. I don’t know how much time you have but another alternative might be to rent the car in Rome and stop in Tivoli on your way to Assisi or, if you are returning home from Rome, drive from Siena with a stop in Orvieto. You have a lot of beautiful alternatives depending on your schedule.

Thanks for your reply. It seems to validate what I was thinking. Our reservation in Assisi does not start till Saturday so we have two days before that so we thought we would spend them in Siena then on to Assisi. Then after a week take train to Florence: stay overnight and fly back to States.
