Renting a car in Siena

I'm going to be in Siena for a few days in late May. I am thinking of renting a car for one day so I can explore some of the hill towns that are off the beaten path and difficult to reach by bus. I've been doing internet research into the various options, and would appreciate some advice.

First, any companies or brokers that you've had especially good or bad experiences with?

Second, do you think if I wait til I'm there and try to book in person I might get a better deal? Or am I likely to be shut out altogether?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, that is my plan. Maybe just a leisurely drive around the countryside.

We used Hertz for our last 2 trips to Europe -Italy and Spain- Book before you go cheaper, as you pay in American $ not Euro's We also are going back this year and have found that Avis rent out of Siena- I have not done all my research yet but contact Avis and Hertz at their 800 #- They will quote you a price but double check on line at .com for each to compare. Lane,
You may also want to check Maggiore (Italy's National) www.maggiore.it

also, do a search for past posts, lots of folks have mentioned autoeurope - or something similar to that...

Make sure you rent from an agency that will let you do a one day rental. As I recall there are a few that have 2 or three minimum rental periods.

Are you going to rent/return a car and visit multiple hill towns in one day?

" so I can explore some of the hill towns that are off the beaten path and difficult to reach by bus "

Any particular place in mind? The local buses go nearly everywhere. Keep in mind that an "off the beaten path and difficult to reach by bus" village will most certainly not be car friendly.
