Renting a car in Sicily

Hello! My wife and I are booking a car through Expedia with Hertz and the cost is only $8/day + $11/day for insurance with zero deductible. We’re picking it up in Palermo and dropping it off in Catania. We’re wondering if this deal is too good to be true???

If you're renting in the fall I am not surprised: they have a glut of cars for summer demand.
Same in spring: new cars come for the summer, and they'd rather rent them cheaply than have them idle.

Expedia provides zero support or recourse if there's a problem. I would look at Autoeurope and only use Hertz, Avis, Budget, or Europecar.

We always book with AutoEurope including last year in Sicily for reasons stated above.

I found a much better deal with Kemwel than with AutoEurope, Gemut, or the car rental companies themselves. So, check all alternatives, and make sure it includes the insurance you want. I insisted on zero deductable coverage, which naturally raised the price and put some companies out of the running.

When you say "is this deal too good to be true," do make sure it includes insurance. In Italy, some insurance is mandatory (I don't remember details), so if it's not included in the initial quote, you will have to pay it anyway.

Last September, we paid $323 for 15 days through Avis, rental and insurance. The mandatory liability insurance was included in the price. We picked up and dropped off in Catania. Upon arrival we opted for the additional full coverage with no deductibles for piece of mind. I don’t remember what the additional cost was, but was worth it for the piece of mind. We always rental directly through the rental company. No problems, no damage, terrible rural road markings in Sicily, but a good trip.
