Renting a Car in Rome

Hi! I am in need of a car for approximately 1 month this summer to get to/from my internship. I am going to be living about an hour north of the city and already ruled out the metro (I have been to Rome many times before, know the trains/metros, etc.). Where should I look to get the lowest price? I found a car on Avis for about $550 for 2 weeks. Help!

I have found the best rates at autoeurope.com and kemwel.com. Both web site look identical, but the rates are slightly different.

$550 is for 2 weeks is a GREAT price. But be cautioned that once you add in "additional" Insurance, etc. it may jump (and substantially)!

Also try www.sixt.com as I've received "special" city rates for Rome from Sixt!

And www.europcar.com also runs specials... To beat that price, it would have to be a special! That's a solid rate for 2 weeks in Italy!

Ciao,
Ron

Usaully if you take a car for more then three weeks you can get a better deal by leasing. I do think the rate you were quoted is not that bad,, but perhaps you will find better , good luck. Really , why not arrange to live closer and not have to spend money on a car, parking, and gas.I bet the extra expences could well be invested in a place to live closer to your job. Think about it, sometimes a bargain( like staying an hour from work) is not such a good deal in the long run.

Where is your internship in Rome and where are you living?
Since you have been to Rome many times you obviously know the cost and difficulties of finding a parking spot and paying for it. (Unless your company offers free parking?) Either you will spend what you are paying to rent the car to park it or you will have to park a long way outside of the city and still take the train. I know that they have greatly improved the train lines that go from outside Rome (from the North) into the city as so many people live outside the city limits now. I would honestly re-evaluate the situation, there are many people on this board who would be happy to help you. I used to do the opposite, I lived in the center and worked just outside the raccordo. Can't say I ever really envied my colleagues who drove to work while I took the metro and then the bus. And as it is only for a month....
