We are taking a train from Milan to Florence (October). We wanted to rent a car to get to our hotel in Tuscany and travel around for a few days. After we return our car to Florence we will stay one night in the city and then fly out. Any suggestions about renting a car in Florence?

We always rented at the airport so as to not have any risk of ZTL violations if we inadvertently went around a block the wrong way. Since the airport is now connected to town with a tram it is easy to get there and do that or drop the car there and get back in town.

I would rent through a car rental agency. Choose one that's convenient for your location and offers the best deals. But also take into consideration what past customers have said about them.

Besides the ZTLs, watch out for lanes reserved for public transport in and around Florence. In many cases the yellow lines outlining the lanes are faded and can be difficult to recognize, especially on bright sunny days. Don't need to be surprised with an expensive ticket from a photo camera (they have them on roads approaching Florence, so be careful when leaving, or when returning a rental car).
