We are planning to rent a car from Florence for our stay in Tuscany in June. I have been reading about ZTL, and it sounds diffucult to drive in Florence. Any suggestions or experiences you can share?
Just rent the car after your stay in Florence on the morning you decide to head out of town. While having a car it's a good idea to stay in accommodations outside Florence, certainly outside the city center. There is no problem with the ZTL exiting the city center with a car, there might be problems entering the city center if you don't know how to go about it. If you plan to drive into Florence to return the car, then I'll give you directions to avoid the ZTL. Book your car then come back here.
Roberto, Thanks for the information. I see you are the expect on this forum so I'm going to ask your advise. We are planning to leave Rome by train to Florence to rent the car only. We are not staying in Florence as we rented a house 9 miles from San Gimignano. We will do day trip to Florence. Should we rent the car from Rome and drive to house and just return car to Florence? We have never been to Italy, or Europe so we are not familiar with driving there. Or can you suggest a better alternative? Thanks!!
If you plan to rent a car that day to go to San Gimignano anyway, then you might as well rent the car in Rome and drive directly from Rome. Why waste €45 per person to get to Florence first? You say 'we' therefore there must be at least 2 of you. With €90 you can pay for gas and tolls with plenty of money to spare. I don't think saving 2 hours of rental charges are worth the trouble.
