After our time in Florence we are going to Siena for 4 days, then to Assisi for 3 days, then to Rome. Thought I would rent a car in Florence and drive to Siena and Assisi. Maybe drop it at Rome? Or take it back to Florence? Any Suggestions appreciated....

We rented a car in florence, dropped it off in chiusi and then took the train to Rome. It worked out perfect for us.

No sense in backing up, switching transportation mode, etc -- as long as there's no drop-off charge, which there probably isn't.
Driving into Rome is no big deal, driving around once there is useless.
