Renting a Car in between Siena and Florence

We are going to be spending 4 nights in Castellini in Chianti on an upcoming trip to Italy and need some advice on renting a car. We'll be getting to Tuscany via train (from Cinque Terre) and would prefer to rent the car outside of Florence if possible -- it just seems like logistics of driving in Florence would be best avoided. Can anyone recommend a good city that is accessible by train from La Spezia where we could rent a car.

Also please keep in mind that we'll be headed to Venice after our 4 days are through, so we'll need to hop on a train to head up there as well.

I realize Florence might be the only feasible option, but if there are other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You should be able to pick up a car in La Spezia. Another option would be Pisa.

You could keep the car and drive to Venice, dropping the car at either the airport or Piazole Roma. the drive on the autostrade isn't bad but you will have tolls and fuel costs. The traffic around Mestre and getting into Venice can be horrible though.

I personally would be reluctant to dropoff a car near the florence city center because of all the ZTL areas. You can easliy stray off the correct path and wind up with an expensive ticket or a few.

You could stay on the ring road and drop at the florence airport. I believe there is a shuttle bus to the train station.

Harris,
You could rent in Siena and drop off in Siena or Florence airport. The airport tax only applies to picking up not dropping off.
