My boyfriend and I are visiting Italy next month and are planning on renting a car in Tuscany. We will be visiting the region after Cinque Terre.
Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to go about where to rent the car? We are planning on staying around Montalcino, but our journey there can be flexible. Should we take a train to Pisa, Siena, or Florence then find a rental place (probably near an airport)?
La Spezia would be the best place IMO.
This would give you the opportunity to stop in a town or two on your way to Montalcino.
La Spezia yes, but only Avis is easy to reach and they are not open at lunch or weekends. Otherwise, go directly to Pisa and then to the airport rental car building.

It depends. If you are planning on staying a night or two in Florence or Siena then rent the car as you are leaving that city. If you are renting the car on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday then rent at an airport.
