renting a car Florence to Orvieto?

Hello, we are traveling to Italy in early October - 3 women (two in their 20's, one mid 60's) and plan to rent a car at the Florence airport then drive to Greve area for a night before heading towards Orvieto. One of the girls found an agritourismo she really likes near Greve. Would it be easier to rent a car in Greve or is that possible? Is it difficult to drive out of the Fllorence airport to get to SR 222? I have seen other posts say it's well connected but I have a memory of returning a car to Florence airport and it was quite busy with lots of round abouts... Thankful for any ideas you may have.

Pretty sure no car rental agencies in Greve
Rent in Florence, return in Orvieto
Orvieto only has Hertz so if that’s your return location you are limited

Search the forum for specific directions on leaving Florence-posted by our Florence native Roberto

Oh ooops
Didn’t see you want to rent at airport
We found it very easy from there using GPS but I would never recommend getting into a car and driving right after an overnight flight

If you will already be in Florence then just rent at train station location

All drivers must have an IDP International Driving Permit that you get at your local AAA
Be sure to read up in driving in Italy-ZTLs, parking, speed cameras etc

Thanks for that info - I never thought to look at Orvieto as to what agencies were there so good to know I should look at Hertz. We will be in Florence, already a week in italy so will look at renting at the train station as well. I'm fine driving once out of cities, but get nervous in traffic and round abouts. Silly, but it's me.....

Actually, we dont have to return the car in Orvieto - could also train to Rome from Asissi so will look at what agencies might be there.

Unless things have changed I don’t think there are any major rental agencies in Assisi
At least there weren’t in 2014!

We picked up car in Florence for our time in Tuscany then drove to Assisi for a few nights
From there we drove just about an hour? To Spello and dropped car there then took train to Rome-that was Hertz
Station is just a 5 min walk from the agency

We always rent thru AutoEuopre.com (also check AutoEurope.eu)
A US based consolidator with excellent customer service and usually best rates.

You could return the car in Perugia. Rental offices are near the station. The closest rental offices near Assisi are at the Perugia airport, which is located in St. Egidio, half way between Perugia and Assisi. However you you intend to take a train after the rental return it makes more sense to return at Perugia in the city. Personally I would drive to Rome, if that is your intended next destination, but that is me.

Be sure that each driver has the compulsory International Driver's Permit. You'll also need to be vigilant to avoid the ZTL limited traffic areas, which exist in most towns.

Make sure that you understand the special challenges of driving in Italy. These include ZTL areas which can lead to huge fines, speed limits which are deliberately set to be low by US standards and in which there are camera enforcement of speeds, and other driving issues. There are no other forums in RS which have as many posts about "got a ticket 1 year after our return" and so forth.

I will check rantal returns in Rome to see if there are any on the outskirts - I don't fancy trying to drive in the city just for my sanity's sake. Thank's for the information on Perugia as well! We wil all have international DLs and good reminders on speed llimits and ZTLs.
