Renting a boat in Sorrento

We will be in Sorrento for a few days and our apartment host has given us an option of a boat tour from Sorrento to Capri, go around the island and a stop in Capri to explore.
We are from Florida and familar with boats. Is is possible/safe to rent a boat and go to Capri on our own or explore some of the coast on our own? Would we need a GPS on the boat?

Thanks,
Lynne

Conditions of the sea often are rough, cancelling boat rides. When we stayed on Capri for four nights, we could not take a boat ride until the last day.I can’t answer your questions but recooked this websites, capri.net and capri.com. To tell you the truth the boat ride was our least favorite thing we did on Capri.

You got some useful replies already.

I am inclined to think that a Boston Whaler type is not suitable for the distance, wind, and open water involved in this proposed outing. How much boat are you prepared to pay for? It's also worth considering that, while Capri is very pretty, most people go to it for the purpose of walking around. The perimeter of the island is very pretty seen from up on the cliffs, too. Your boat cannot go into the Blue Grotto, even at Boston Whaler size.

Be aware that, especially in high season, the ferries from Sorrento to Capri can be very large, and have sealed passenger decks with limited windows to look out. They are not sightseeing craft. One of our ferries had over 200 airline-style seats in it.
