Rental return in Rome

We are ending a roadtrip (through Tuscany) in Rome. We will be covering Pitigliano, Orvieto and Mostri Park right before we head to Rome. We will most likely be finding some accommodation close to Trevi fountain or the Pantheon area, where we will spend a few days before flying back home. I am trying to find the best place in Rome to return our rental car (Europcar, or any other company is ok too).

  1. Are there any tolls or other fees while driving through Rome that we should account for? We have heard about ZTLs and will try to be careful to keep away from road signs declaring "ZTL". We are just driving in the city to return the car and for no other purpose.
  2. We would prefer to drive as close to our accommodation (somewhere in the Trevi fountain/Pantheon area) as possible. If that's not possible we would like to have a fast mode of public transportation available between the rental office and this area.
  3. Does it just make sense to return the car in Orvieto or Mostri Park instead? If yes, which place would be preferred?

Thanks!

If you want Orvieto, you're talking Hertz. Right across the street from the train station.

We did the reverse rout as you. We picked up our car just beyond the Vatican. There was a metro stop nearby which would get you near the Spanish Steps.

You will not be able to safely drive to your hotel near the Trevi/Pantheon area without incurring serious traffic violations. Rome has its own ZTL rules and many hotels do not participate. No tourist in his right mind should ever consider driving a rental car anywhere near Rome's city center.

The Via Sardegna car rental offices are my preferred drop-off location when coming in from Orvieto. They are a block away from the Porta Pinciana entrance, a fairly easy way to enter the city from the north. With luggage, the best way to get to your lodging from this location will be by taxi.

Termini is fairly easy to get to safely so drop there. Personally I would not have accommodation in either Trevi or the Pantheon. Too damn many tourists. There are many nicer areas that are still conveniently walkable to those sites.

If you rent from Europcar you can find their offices here.

Via Sardegna, Termini station, or even Tiburtina station are all good.

If you return at Termini station you actually return the car at the multistory car park part of the Radisson hotel located at the corner of Via Giolitti and Via Mamiani. All rental car returns are on the top stories (no matter which company they are all located in the same parking structure). I usually return it there. The car park is called Giolitti Parking and the address is Via Giovanni Giolitti, 267, Rome.
Set your GPS or Google Maps navigator on your phone to take you there and you'll do fine. Once you are done, you can call a taxi or walk to the taxi stand in front of Termini on Piazza dei Cinquecento (about 10 min walk)
I've never returned at Via Sardegna, but it would be just as easy.
Either one requires a taxi to the Pantheon area, because it would be a long walk with luggage.
